Coherence of Curriculum, Pedagogy, and Assessment

Years of research and study show that an education system is coherent when the curriculum, the pedagogy, and the assessment are aligned and reinforce one another. A coherent curriculum strives to connect purpose with classroom experiences through planned and specific progressions of learning for students.

At Kasiga, our vision is to create responsible global citizens who contribute to society with empathy, integrity and are committed to excellence in all their endeavors. do this by laying the right foundation for their education and learning system. Our programs embody curriculum coherence as we align and reinforce the relationships between our curriculum, textbooks, pedagogy, and assessment.

The curriculum coherence model at Kasiga is established in the following way:

(i) What is taught should be learning-objective led and not activity-led.

(ii) Assessment focuses on the content of the curriculum.

(iii) Assessment reports indicate what should be retaught.

The curriculum at Kasiga contains learning objectives coherent to its relationships to pedagogy and assessment so that learners can develop more sophisticated ways of thinking. The pedagogy relates to our active learning approach to teaching and learning which is exemplified in our teacher guides, schemes of work, endorsed resources, and in our face-to-face and online professional development.  It is the learning objectives, specified in our curriculum framework, that influence the suggested teaching and learning activities, promoting active engagement, and thinking on the part of the learners.

The final part of our curriculum coherence model is assessment. We design our assessment questions based on the learning objectives taken from our curriculum frameworks. This means that learners should not be surprised by assessment questions and can show the knowledge and skills that they have learned in lessons. We also provide assessment reports that show the learning curve of the learners which allows teachers to focus on students’ next steps of learning.

Using coherence as part of our curriculum design makes our institute robust because learners can make connections between the content and skills they are learning and what they are asked in our assessments.
