Reflective learning involves students thinking about what they have read, done, or learned, relating the lesson at hand to their own lives and making meaning out of that. It’s more than just memorizing some facts or formulas.
Being a reflective learner involves making your learning a more conscious process. It helps students become an active learner by asking questions and thinking critically about their own ideas.
Many students have experienced learning as passive learners which means that they have been required to read textbooks and journal articles, listen to lectures and write exams dependent on rote memory. The Cambridge curriculum allows students to step out of the world of rote learning and enter the world of more reflective learning.
Reflection, as the name suggests, is a practice that facilitates the exploration, examination and understanding of what we are feeling, thinking and learning. Thoughtful consideration is given to academic material, personal experiences and interpersonal relationships. Reflection is a form of internal inquiry that extends the relevance of theory and deepens our understanding of the practice of our everyday life and work.
There are various advantages of reflective learning for a student:
(i) They accept the responsibility for their own learning.
(ii) They become inquisitive by nature and think of reasons behind everything.
(iii) They become aware about their internal thinking processes.
(iv) They become aware of others’ motives and actions.
(v) They tend to be more solution oriented.
It is essential that schools help students learn the literacies and knowledge needed to provide access to new ways of problem solving and thinking, but this is not enough. Students need to explore and discover what their passions are and have time to pursue them.
