“Sports teaches you character, it teaches you to play by the rules, it teaches you to know what it feels like to win and lose-it teaches you about life.” – Billie Jean King

Being active in sports not only plays an important role in ensuring the physical health of an individual but also contributes significantly to improving one’s mental wellness & teaches many life-skills. Especially when it comes to students, active participation in sports ensures their physical well-being and helps them focus better in academics. Furthermore, it serves as the best icebreaker for new students and helps in building friendship.

Hence, it can be said that the inclusion of sports in a school’s curriculum is extremely important for the overall development of students & makes them all-rounders. Here are some reasons stating the benefits of including sports in a school’s curriculum:

  1. Ensuring physical health: Regular physical activity in the form of sports is a boon for students’ health & helps in keeping many diseases at bay. Especially where problems like obesity are pestering youngsters, playing sports gives students an active lifestyle. It improves their stamina & gives them the strength to do a lot more.
  2. Boosts their self-esteem: Scoring a goal, hitting a six or winning a race not only makes a student happy but it also boosts their confidence. Small gestures like a pat on the back or victory hug with their teammates fill them up with happiness & pride. They learn to welcome criticism in a healthy way which helps in improving different aspects of their life.
  3. Life skills that go a long way: Playing sports is not only about physical wellness, it also teaches students many life skills like leadership, sportsmanship, discipline & so on. Sports help in developing many social skills & help students get along with their teammates. They learn to cooperate & eventually function better individually and in a team.
  4. Improved mental/emotional health: Sports, on one hand, strengthens students physically, it also gives them the mental power to deal with various situations effectively. Being physically active helps them deal with stress & the release of happy hormones reduces any sort of mental depression & makes them emotionally fit & cheerful.
  5. Better performance in academics: Being active in sports does not mean lower performance in academics. It rather improves their memory & enhances their cognitive skills. Being physically active helps them stay focused & increases their concentration. Participating in sports teaches them how to manage their time effectively which makes them better at multitasking.

It can be said that sports and games encompass more than just the benefits of good health, they are quite instrumental in increasing confidence, self-esteem and mental alertness among students which reinforces the importance of sports in school’s curriculum.
